Salt: Chapter 1

In this chapter, many uses of salt were explained. I did not believe that salt was that important. Salt is used for pickling. Pickling preserves the vegetables that would not survive without it. I found it really cool that water, soy, and salt could help people survive. I kind of want to just go out into the middle of nowhere and try it out myself. I think it is so weird that monopolies were made from salt. Who would guess that? I never thought the sale of salt originating in China, let alone be so important to a country. I think that the Chinese were really smart to learn to drill and to use bamboo piping because it doesn't rot due to the salt. It really surprises me that the sale and profit of salt lasted for so many years.

Hello my salty sea dog!
I agree that pickles would be an awkward staple food. I like them now and again, though. Maybe will get some for snacktime (Sorry, reading all this salt stuff is making me very hungry). If you go on a soy, salt, and water diet, I'll join you. We could make a documentary like SUPERSIZE ME but call it SALTIFY ME. Move over Morgan Sperlock!

Did you split your posts? It seems the other post is split? Perhaps you didn't understand how much to write the first time? Just curious.

Pickling did seem to be a big deal, as was curing meats. This all was key before the age of the fridge. Today, we take salt for granted, which is why Mr. K uses this book to show us otherwise.

Interesting points and connections that you have drawn. Nice post.
