ch. 4.. well I guess I'm gonna have to redo this stupid blog

Ok, well I definitely am amazed by the Romans and how salt pertains to so many different cultures. It still is absolutely insane to me. Salt is so weird. How in the world can it be so important?

I was very excited that in this chapter, it wasn't JUST about fish or sauces or mining the salt. This time, there were more recipes. I'm very afraid to try some of this food because I think that I might die. These recipes are from so many years ago, who knows what they are talking about? Also, I wonder where the book got all of them. They are so old. I didn't think that many of them would still be around.

I think that the garum stuff is so nasty! I really do not want to have a party to try out that! I think that I would barf. That is nasty sounding food. Ew. Yuck. It does not sound like a fun time to eat. I think it is so gross that they would stick it on so many things too.

At least this time there were other things such as the dyes and table salt. I think it was really cool how they dyed clothing. I'm happy that table salt was used to put on vegetables. Although, I don't know where they went wrong with the whole putting salt in wine. I think that wine would taste gross anyhow, let alone with salt thrown into it.

The Romans definitely owned at trading salt. They were so powerful. Salt sounds like the business to go into. I'm really starting to get sick of this salty taste from this book that I would really like to go to something sweet like sugar. I want to learn about sugar now.

Ch. 4... I can't believe there's more about salt!

Every time I read a new chapter, I can not believe how much a culture revolves around something so simple as salt. If still amazes me.

Chapter 3- the Celt salt

In this chapter, there was a lot mentioned once again about finding bodies preserved by the salt. I find it so cool that it was naturally preserved. I knew that the bodies would of been kept good, but I never thought about the clothes either. It would have been so weird to find vibrant colors on a dead body that was really old. I want to come upon a dead body like that. It would be so freaky, but I would find it very interesting. I wonder if they look like raisons like the mummies did.

Once again, I find it crazy how smart people were back a long time ago. They had great ideas on how to mine and where to mine. I personally think we're probably a lot stupider than people were back long ago. We have had so much knowledge passed down, but they had to figure out all this stuff first.

I didn't know that the Celts moved into the Britians! I wonder if I'm part Celtic. I know that I'm Irish and such, so maybe I would date back to the Celts. I have the blonde hair that they did! Mine is not bleached, but maybe their hair overtime just changed color. It is interesting to think about.

Ch. 2... the attack of Salt

Once again, I did not know that salt could be so important to a society. It seems as though that the Egyptians wouldn't have been able to survive without it! They put salt in everything to get it to be preserved, especially their meats. I think it is gross that they would stick them in jars. I can just see a bunch of really nasty meat in a jar just sitting there. As soon as I would open it up it would stink so bad!

I could not believe how many different types of meats that they would eat! Think of today's meats. We mainly eat chicken, cow, and pig. That's about it. We will occassionally eat fish or some other type of sea food or other things such as birds and deer. I wish we were like the Egyptians because of their varieties in meat. Maybe I'd eat more meat than I do now because I get bored with the same old things.

I knew that there was a lot of salt over in the Egypt area, but I find it amazing how many different places they could get their salt. It is really weird that they would alter their salt too. Anyone want to go and try out some new salts? I'm all up for it! It would be so creapy to have a different colored salt, but I'd still try it! I wonder if some would taste better than others, or if it would just be better to preserve myself after I die. Hm. Who knows?

I found this section more interesting than the last. I think it is because they talked about mummification for a while. It fascinates me! Salt is such a cool thing in the way that it can make things last for so long and keep everything good. I wish that there were something in this world that would keep the world that way.

ahhh! more salt!!!

Salt was very important to the Chinese, without it, they would not be where they are today in the world and neither would we. Their inventions that have accumulated over the years such as papermaking, printing, gunpowder, and the compass have gotten us through a lot. Pickling of vegetables is so weird, but if you think about it, how would America get by without pickling of vegetables? Preservatives are so important for transport of our produce. Also, we love salt on many of our foods and also is used in baking many delicious foods.

I can not understand how pickled vegetables were a staple food so many years ago. How could they eat them all the time? Also, I really do not like the whole no salt on rice thing. I can not stand rice without something on it. It is so weird that salt was sold in the center of town like it was a really normal thing. Salt, I believe, is pretty much today's version of bread.

Even though this section was really hard to read because it was just about salt for the most part, I found it very interesting. I never thought of how much it really affects our everyday lives. It has such an impact in how societies grew. Salt was very important in China many years ago, and it is now in America as well.

Salt: Chapter 1

In this chapter, many uses of salt were explained. I did not believe that salt was that important. Salt is used for pickling. Pickling preserves the vegetables that would not survive without it. I found it really cool that water, soy, and salt could help people survive. I kind of want to just go out into the middle of nowhere and try it out myself. I think it is so weird that monopolies were made from salt. Who would guess that? I never thought the sale of salt originating in China, let alone be so important to a country. I think that the Chinese were really smart to learn to drill and to use bamboo piping because it doesn't rot due to the salt. It really surprises me that the sale and profit of salt lasted for so many years.
