Once again, I did not know that salt could be so important to a society. It seems as though that the Egyptians wouldn't have been able to survive without it! They put salt in everything to get it to be preserved, especially their meats. I think it is gross that they would stick them in jars. I can just see a bunch of really nasty meat in a jar just sitting there. As soon as I would open it up it would stink so bad!
I could not believe how many different types of meats that they would eat! Think of today's meats. We mainly eat chicken, cow, and pig. That's about it. We will occassionally eat fish or some other type of sea food or other things such as birds and deer. I wish we were like the Egyptians because of their varieties in meat. Maybe I'd eat more meat than I do now because I get bored with the same old things.
I knew that there was a lot of salt over in the Egypt area, but I find it amazing how many different places they could get their salt. It is really weird that they would alter their salt too. Anyone want to go and try out some new salts? I'm all up for it! It would be so creapy to have a different colored salt, but I'd still try it! I wonder if some would taste better than others, or if it would just be better to preserve myself after I die. Hm. Who knows?
I found this section more interesting than the last. I think it is because they talked about mummification for a while. It fascinates me! Salt is such a cool thing in the way that it can make things last for so long and keep everything good. I wish that there were something in this world that would keep the world that way.

Leave it to the creepy psycho to be facinated by salt and mumification. I bet you just loved the description of pulling the brains out, didn't you?
I agree, we should have a salt tasting party! Have you ever had ocean salt? It definatively tastes different from "normal" salt, and I think that that's just because it's not as purified, so I can't imagine how different a totally new species of salt would taste!
Hey, Dale quit making fun of Sarah. I thought the same thing about the different kinds of salt and I too also wanted to try them out. Sarah I so in for trying them out with you.
Salt tasting party! Where's it going to be? I definitely want to try me some colored salt. I wonder how many different types of edible salt are out there and in how many colors? It would be cool to have colored table salt. We should invent some!
I waited for us to finish the ancient cultures before assigning the book. I figured it might be a good idea to give you guys a base of info, before reading it. I hope that helped when reading things about Egypt, Greece, Rome, etc.
Salting meat is a lot like jerky I guess. As for meat in a jar, people still today eat SPAM (not the e-mail) but the food. Not for me, but people do eat it.
YOU WROTE: "Think of today's meats. We mainly eat chicken, cow, and pig. That's about it. We will occassionally eat fish..." Great point. I guess we are very limited in what we eat. You would think people would become more bored with food.
I guess they used flavored and colored salt for variety?
Nice comments.
